Timberly Universal Chuck Spanner (for use on teknatool nova chuck inserts )
Timberly has just had this 38mm spanner manufactured out of 8mm thick hardened G350 steel, with extra length to the handle. This spanner is 50% thicker and 20% wider than previously available lathe spanners.
Teknatool now manufacture their chuck adapters out of round bar, thus diminishing the seating area for the jaw of the spanner. Some lighter-weight spanners have stretched. This rounded chuck adapter causes the spanner to stretch more and rounds the edges of the nut even more
Spanner Use Instructions
An essential part of any woodturners kit is a good chuck spanner.
We see people use their knock-out bar, or even a chisel, between the chuck jaws to take a chuck off the lathe spindle. This plays havoc on the jaws and the adapter nut can become loose in the chuck body causing improper seating on the spindle. Or the adapter can be left behind on the lathe spindle.
The chuck insert is designed to be permanently in the chuck and locked in with the grub screw provided.
Fitting the Chuck to a Lathe
Align the chuck so that it starts on the spindle then with your free hand wind the hand wheel. Then lock the lathe spindle and, with the aid of your chuck spanner, nip the chuck up firmly to make sure the adapter is seated against the spindle. This is enough to prevent the chuck undoing.
Failing to nip it up means there may be a tiny gap left between the lathe head and the chuck adapter. When the lathe is started, or when the chisel first cuts the wood, the chuck can snap up extremely tight. Then you may need more than a strong arm to take the chuck off and may damage the lathe in doing that.
