I turn very large out of balance pieces of timber which place a lot of load on normal lathe live centers.This also means the tail stock and head spindle are under stress from the out of balance work. 

Having the extra support by bringing up the tail stock means you can rough down to round allot quicker and vibration is reduced so isn’t  as hard on the lathe.
