The Textura                          Copyright © Timberly ltd 2011          Textura In ActionTextura in Action

                                                                      By Terry Scott

 INTRODUCTION

The unique feature of this tool is having one handle which accepts six different knurls, changed with the quick use of the Allen key supplied.

Designed with left and right hand off-sets so you can access tight areas against beads and spigots.

The shaft is case hardened and the knurls are high speed steel so that texturing can be done at any speed on the lathe.
Short bursts are, however, recommended. at higher speeds as the hand piece may become hot. A light oiling will prevent the knurl binding with resin and dust
For your first trial of the Timberly Textura have the tool rest at, or just below, center height of the work, and far enough away from the work for the knurl to rotate freely and be pulled clear of the work. Start at about 500 rpm.

Hold the handle of the Timberly Textura high and thus the knurl well below center. Lower the handle to bring the knurl firmly into contact with the wood.
A spray with lubricant or wiping with a light machine oil after use will reduce gummy timber sticking to the knurls, and also keep the knurls running smoothly.
If used the tool is used on work that has been oiled during sanding the knurl may become stuck.
Disassemble and clean the tool with mineral turpentine then spray with lubricant or wipe all parts with a light machine oil.

CHANGING THE KNURL

1. Work over a clean area of bench space to ensure that none of the parts are lost.
2. Clean any debris out of the grub screw that is to be turned.
3. Use the 1.5mm Allen key supplied to loosen the grub screw.
4. Slide the axle out of the handle until the knurl drops out.
5. Place a new knurl into the notch.
6. Keep the flat grub screw seat in position for the grub screw to tighten on to it.
7. Slide the axle through the handle until it is flush with both sides.
8. Use the Allen key to tighten the grub screw.
9. Apply the new texture.

and thus the knurl well below center. Lower the handle to bring the knurl firmly into
contact with the wood.
The number of different textures you can create with this unique tool is limited only by
your imagination. There are so many different variations that I have not tried them all.
Differing pitch and twist profiles are made possible by altering the presentation angle of
the knurl; by changing to a knurl with a different pattern; or by altering the speed of the lathe.
The Timberly Textura does more "pressing" of pattern into the wood unlike the larger wheeled texturing tools which tear and pull the fibres out leaving an unsightly band or patchy area.
The Timberly Textura works just as well on the end grain of boxes as it does on the side of hollow forms or the cross-grain on the outside of a bowls

The Textura Measures 150mm long 12mmx 12mm with 15mm Diameter Knurls
